Fassa Bortolo International Prize for Sustainable Architecture - IX Ed.
The names of the winners of the Fassa Bortolo International Prize for Sustainable Architecture, 2012 Edition, were announced, and the event will end June 25 at Palazzo Tassoni Este in Ferrara with the awards ceremony. The competition, now in its ninth edition, is an event with a strong international character: as demonstrated by the increasing number of works from different countries, which stood out for their heterogeneity. Even 155 competitors divided into two different sections: the Works Made by Professionals, with 64 entrants, and the Degree Thesis Works section, with 91.

The Works Made by Professionals section involved projects coming from even 17 different countries, of all the Continents.
As highlighted by Thomas Herzog, Jury Chairman "...The subject was and is still the same: the increasing importance of saving our planet's limited resources. After decades devoted to the topic – starting from the early '70s with smaller groups and then with the birth of political circles – today the issue has finally reached the heart of society. It is a global phenomenon, not limited to Western Countries. This is what is reflected in this year's Jury. For the first time the latter included some non-European members, such as Prof. Peter Rich from South Africa and Prof. Li Xiaodong from China".

The Jury of this edition is made up of prominent people from different cultural backgrounds, as a guarantee of a neutral choice, free of any stylistic influence. The only criterion: rewarding quality architecture, taking into account location, task and use of sustainable resources. With the President, Thomas Herzog, are Peter Rich (South Africa), LI Xiaodong (China), Prof. Nicola Marzot (Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara) and Gianluca Minguzzi (Secretary of the prize). As usual the professionals who took part to the event were those who made bio-architectural projects over the past five years and new graduates who have based their degree thesis on the subject of sustainability and balanced relationship between building and environment.

Two silver medals were awarded:
to Ingenhoven architects + Architectus for the work 1 Bligh (Australia) and to LAN Architecture for the EDF Archives Centre work (France).

Three were the projects worthy of mention:
