OPUS MOTUS
The moving colours of stone

September 05, 2013

Playful, passionate, hypnotic, colourful.
An apotheosis of natural stones colours, Opus Motus is the new scenic stone design installation which Raffaello Galiotto in conjunction with Lithos Design will be previewing at the upcoming Macef and Marmomacc shows.
Opus Motus is a collection of circular and dynamic marble inlays which can be activated manually by the public with a simple lever-mechanism. The various colours of the marble tesserae, which were selected with the same attention and care of the ancient "stone painters", come apart through the rotating movement providing new and impressive shapes and colours to the observer.
The set of this installation will make up a spectacular scene: a radiant landscape of 6 works (120 cm in diameter, 2 cm thick and 200 cm high) composed of gaudy mechanical vertical spinning tops that visitors, with a natural playful instinct, will activate via the lever.
The inlaid circle will begin to spin progressively faster... the colours of nature will merge together, amalgamating and forming other new shades... the figures will open up in a majestic and thrilling crescendo. An explosion of colours and morphologies will reveal to every onlooker unique and surprising optical messages.

The Opus Motus work is pure incitement to sunniness and positive thinking because the ensemble of natural materials, colours, geometric shapes and motion generate them almost naturally. And visitors have fun while actively participating in the installation, where they are responsible for the movement.
With this installation, the designer Raffaello Galiotto and Lithos Design pay respectful homage to the skills of Italian master inlayers, reinterpreting the past with a contemporary approach and implementing their own profound competence in the field of natural stone. All colours and geometric structures used for Opus Motus were purpose-designed according to specific optical and chromatic effects.
With Opus Motus, after 3D experimentation, Lithos Design explores a new form of expression to broach the unexplored territory of stone colours. All this is supported by an in-depth knowledge of stone materials, of their sources, of the ability to work them through delicate and sophisticated industrial systems and significant investments in Research and Development.
